14:8 You have been the object of Israel’s hopes.

You have saved them when they were in trouble.

Why have you become like a resident foreigner 20  in the land?

Why have you become like a traveler who only stops in to spend the night?

[145:19]  1 tn In this context “desire” refers to the followers’ desire to be delivered from wicked enemies.

[145:19]  2 tn Heb “the desire of those who fear him, he does.”

[19:20]  3 tn The masculine noun מִזְבֵּחַ (mizbbeakh, “altar”) in v. 19 is probably the subject of the masculine singular verb הָיָה (hayah) rather than the feminine noun מַצֵּבָה (matsevah, “sacred pillar”), also in v. 19.

[19:20]  4 tn Heb “a sign and a witness to the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts] in the land of Egypt.”

[19:20]  5 tn רָב (rav) is a substantival participle (from רִיב, riv) meaning “one who strives, contends.”

[35:4]  6 tn Heb “Say to the hasty of heart,” i.e., those whose hearts beat quickly from fear.

[35:4]  7 tn The jussive form וְיֹשַׁעֲכֶם (vÿyoshaakhem), which is subordinated to the preceding imperfect with vav conjunctive, indicates purpose.

[43:3]  8 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

[43:3]  9 sn Seba is not the same as Sheba in southern Arabia; cf. Gen 1:10; 1 Chr 1:9.

[45:21]  10 tn Heb “Declare! Bring near!”; NASB “Declare and set forth your case.” See 41:21.

[45:21]  11 tn Or “a righteous God and deliverer”; NASB, NIV, NRSV “a righteous God and a Savior.”

[49:26]  12 sn Verse 26a depicts siege warfare and bloody defeat. The besieged enemy will be so starved they will their own flesh. The bloodstained bodies lying on the blood-soaked battle site will look as if they collapsed in drunkenness.

[49:26]  13 tn Heb “flesh” (so KJV, NASB).

[49:26]  14 tn Heb “your redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

[49:26]  15 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.” See 1:24.

[60:16]  16 sn The nations and kings are depicted as a mother nursing her children. Restored Zion will be nourished by them as she receives their wealth as tribute.

[60:16]  17 tn Or “redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

[60:16]  18 sn See 1:24 and 49:26.

[63:8]  19 tn Heb “children [who] do not act deceitfully.” Here the verb refers to covenantal loyalty.

[14:8]  20 tn It would be a mistake to translate this word as “stranger.” This word (גֵּר, ger) refers to a resident alien or resident foreigner who stays in a country not his own. He is accorded the privilege of protection through the common rights of hospitality but he does not have the rights of the native born or citizen. The simile here is particularly effective. The land was the Lord’s land; they were but resident foreigners and tenants on it (Lev 25:23). Jeremiah’s complaint here is particularly bold. For further information on the status of “resident foreigners” see IDB 4:397-99 s.v. “Sojourner.”
